Wayne County Public Schools has listed their holiday activities that will take place this week across the district.
Brogden Middle
The school has received a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart to help needy students with presents for Christmas. A local church also partnered with the school to collect toys for needy students.
Charles B. Aycock High
Students are assisting the hospital in providing Christmas for the family. HOSA students will also be visiting Brithaven Nursing Home on December 18th to read Christmas stories to the residents. HOSA will be working at the Soup Kitchen on January 2nd. The HOSA Club will deliver poinsettias to hospital patients on Dec. 24th.
Dillard Middle
On Wednesday, December 17, the school will make the holidays a little brighter for 20-30 students. Turkeys donated by Carolina Turkey along with canned goods collected by students and staff, will be given to needy families who have children attending the school. The meals will be distributed at the school between 2:30-3:30 P.M.
Eastern Wayne Elementary
Students are collecting for the Canned Food Drive and filling the stockings with various gifts for the Salvation Army Stocking Project.
Selected EWE students will have their holiday wishes fulfilled with the help of parents, students, and staff through the Wish Tree Project. All Fourth Graders are assisting with SJAFB Airman’s Cookie Drive, by making cards in their art class to go on each bag of cookies to be distributed to the Airman who live in the dorms at Seymour Johnson. Kindergarten/T1 Classes will also have Polar Express Day on Thursday, December 18. The classes will participate in various literacy and math activities by rotating through different classrooms (8:30 until 10:30).
Edgewood Community Developmental School
The school is sponsoring its annual angel tree for students in need; a tradition that the school has held for several years. This year there were 32 angels from Edgewood School adopted by staff members and supportive organizations. The supportive organizations are 334th Fighter Squadrons Spouses Club and Sunrise Kiwanis. Gifts will be wrapped and delivered to all anonymous recipients by the Committee members.
Greenwood Middle
This year, a class will hold a Multi-cultural Celebrations Project, which will integrate character, music, social studies, science, and math lessons. Students will learn about different holidays celebrated within different cultures. Each student will research and complete a Power Point or display on holidays from different countries. Each student will also do an oral presentation to accompany the project. Students will learn about many celebrations such as Boxing Day, Hina-Matsuri, Eid Al-Fitr and many more. Lessons are intended to help students cultivate a value for their own traditions/celebrations, as well as help them become more globally aware and respectful of those who may have different traditions or celebrations.
Norwayne Middle
This year, the school started a student advisory council. The council is participating in two projects: 1) Selling candy-cane grams to raise money to put together and deliver stockings to 60 elementary students and 2) a food drive which brought in 6747 items that were delivered to the Goldsboro Soup Kitchen. The school has also identified 30 students that will be taken shopping by the school counselor and some parent volunteers. The counselors along with the principal, Mario Re, will also provide a wrapped gift for all students who have a parent deployed.
Northwest Elementary
A 1st grade student, Abbygale Allen said for her birthday that she wanted friends and family to bring canned food goods instead of presents. She then donated the canned foods to the school’s canned food drive for the Salvation Army. Ms. Allen collected two boxes of canned foods. Other activities include 5th grade students making homemade snow globes. For Kindergarten story hour, classes will hear two stories, “How Santa Got His Job” and “How Santa Lost His Job.”
Southern Wayne High
The FTA Club has adopted a local family for Christmas. Students will provide Christmas gifts for the four children. The club hopes to give each child around 10 gifts (toys, school supplies, winter clothing items, etc…)
The ROTC Kitty Hawk Air Society is planning a school “hat day” for the last day of school, Dec. 19th. During the four lunches they will collect $1.00 from students who wish to participate and the proceeds will go to the Empty Stocking Fund. The 1st and 2nd Period ROTC classes are bringing in Christmas Cards w/stamps. These cards will be mailed to send to our wounded military members at Walter Reed Hospital. The 3rd and 4th period ROTC classes are bringing in gifts for needy children or a needy family. The ROTC will have a door decorating competition between the four periods.
